Background of Accra City Campus Library

HISTORY
ACC Library metamorphosed from the External Degree Central Library around 2002, when there was a change in policy for student enrolled to stay and complete their course at the City Campus.
As the External Degree Centre Library, the Library had a seating capacity of 75 persons and total stock of about 5000. The staffing situation consisted of one Para-professional and one Junior Library Assistant and a Cleaner.
Currently ACC Library has one professional, 3 Para-professionals and two national service persons. The stock level is about 16,000 volumes and a seating capacity of about 220. Daily client visit is about 350. The Library serves a student population of about 1500.
ABOUT COLLECTION
The Library has a total collection of about 16,000 volumes of books that cover all subjects taught at the City Campus.
LONG ESSAY
The Library keeps copies of students' long essays submitted to the Library by the supervisors via the Assistant Registrar of City Campus. Such materials are processed and kept under restricted conditions and made available to students on request.
AFRICANA COLLECTION
The Library has Africana Collection. This is a special collection of titles published in Ghana and outside Ghana about Ghana.
Electronically subscribed online and other databases are available for students.
LAW COLLECTION
The Library has a few journals in various subjects which students can access.
  • Other periodicals are also available: Ghana Law Review
  • The Library has a collection of Ghana Law Reports from 1959 - 2003.
  • The complete volumes of the Laws of Ghana.
  • Some Acts of Parliament and Legislative Instruments .
DEPARTMENTS
City Campus Library performs almost all the functions of an Academic Library. But because it is not purpose-built, such departments are not visible. Some of the departments are Acquisitions, Cataloguing, Reference, Circulations, Photocopy, etc.
ACQUISITIONS
As a matter of urgency, to step up acquisitions drive and to improve the quality of the library holdings and to replace outdated books, 2000 volumes of books have been earmarked for acquisition by the close of the year. The current policy of two copies per title has been reviewed to four.

Primary faculty, staff, students.
Secondary users - students from other tertiary institutions.
SERVICES
  • USER EDUCATION
Fresh students are taken through Library Orientation to enable them know at first hand the Library's resources. They are also taken through how manual bibliographic searches are conducted with the use of the Library Catalogue, on-line catalogue resources etc.
PHOTOCOPYING
The facility is situated within the Library. Students are permitted to photocopy parts of a book. The cost of copying is borne by the students, bearing in mind copyright laws and regulations.

These are books kept in books cases. They are primarily prescribed books by lecturers. Students are allowed to pick and use a book upon depositing of an ID card.

The Library provides this service for students. The collection was started in 2002. This has been index for easy retrieval.

  • LENDING
Weekend and over-night lending is allowed
  • REFERENCE
Materials for quick reference are made available to answer students' reference information needs
  • REFERRALS- Library provides referral services to other libraries where information requested could be found.
Readers are held responsible for any damage to a book in their possession and will be required to pay the appropriate cost of the book or fines.
Items that could harm the collection and behaviours that will not permit conducive atmosphere for independent studies are not allowed in any part of the Library. These include but not limited to:

  • Drinks
  • Water ( Bottled or Sachet)
  • Sweets
  • Chewing gum
  • Bottles of ink
  • Cleaning Liquid
  • Liquid Medicine
  • Firearms
  • Smoking
  • Mobile phone
  • 'Colonizing' seats for friends during peak periods
  • Group Discussions.
OFFENCES AND SANCTIONS
Any offence committed or rules violated attract appropriate and prescribed sanctions. These ranges from caution, withdrawal of loaning right to outright suspension or dismissal.

OTHER SERVICES WHEN THE NEW LIBRARY COMMENCES WORK.
The new block is supposed to have a seating capacity of about 850 clients.

Users are expected to take very good care of materials in their possession and thus:
Readers must not write or mark any item from the collection; neither should they cut nor damage any book.
Readers must not trace any picture or figure from any book or material.
